The mutual support and information offered by Biteback is founded on a series of core beliefs as outlined below.
- With appropriate support, time and commitment, the battle with an eating disorder can be won.
- ALL individuals, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity or culture, who are or have been affected by an eating disorder should have access to support that is appropriate, timely and accessible.
- Understanding gained through experience is highly valuable and should be respected as such. By sharing experiences individuals can support each other in facing fears, tackling problems and combating feelings of isolation. Listening to the experiences and successes of others can be motivating, hopeful and empowering.
- Everyones problems, fear, hopes and experiences are unique and should be respected as such. Everyone has the right to be treated as an individual.
- The process of fighting an eating disorder should be seen in a positive light; it is not about changing eating habits alone but is about building confidence, raising self-esteem and finding a person’s sense of self and individuality.
- Beneath the veil of an eating disorder exists a whole person with hopes and dreams that should be celebrated and encouraged. The eating disorder and the individual affected ARE NOT one and the same and, in recognition of this, should be treated as separate entities.
- The mutual support offered by Biteback can run successfully alongside and in harmony with professional support. Both mutual and professional support play a vital role in recovery.
- Professionals and those affected by eating disorders can learn from one anothers experience. Biteback strives to promote and support the positive exchange of knowledge and information.
